TRAVERSE CITY -- Authorities suspect a man and woman tried to kill a Munson Medical Center patient by injecting her with drugs in her hospital bed, an incident that prompted three arrests and could be tied to a local drug probe.

Three suspects are in custody this morning, Traverse City police Sgt. Jim Bussell said.

The probe began Wednesday afternoon after authorities received a report that a potential overdose at Munson occurred soon after two people visited a female patient's room at Munson. Bussell said city detectives and Traverse Narcotics Team officers are investigating the case as potential attempted homicide.

"We're still investigating that," he said. "We're not ruling that out."

Medical personnel found the female patient, 27, unconscious, but revived her with a drug used to counteract the effects of an opiate overdose. The woman told authorities she didn't inject heroin at the hospital, Bussell said.

Bussell said investigators identified a suspect vehicle from hospital surveillance footage. He said authorities later spotted and stopped the vehicle and located a Traverse City woman, 35, who had been in the victim's hospital room.

The car's driver, a Benzonia man, 29, turned out to be a third suspect who stayed with the vehicle in the hospital's parking lot. Bussell said that man claimed two suspects paid him to drive him from a Virginia Avenue home to the hospital.

City police, TNT officers, Grand Traverse County sheriff's deputies and Michigan State Police searched that house today at 5:30 a.m.

Bussell said investigators found evidence of numerous drugs, including heroin, and six people in the home, one of whom turned out to be the male suspect from the hospital. He said they arrested the man, 32, of Central Lake.

All three suspects are in Grand Traverse County's jail awaiting arraignment.

Bussell said investigators have a motive in mind if the overdose turns out to be intentional.

"If that were to be proven, it's drug-related," he said.
