PETOSKEY — Traverse City West picked up a 60-36 boys basketball win over Brighton at the Petoskey Invitational Friday with three scorers in double figures.

Alex Scott led the Titans with 20 points and five assists, Thiyo Lakusa collected a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Zach McGuire had 10 points and eight rebounds.

West's junior varsity was defeated by Brighton 67-51. The Titans were led in that contest by Caleb Corwin's 16 points, 12 rebounds and five steals. Chase Grierson added 13 points and four steals.

The Titans (1-0) face Manton Saturday in the second day of action at the Petoskey tournament.


Kalkaska 53

Harbor Springs 39

Kalkaska trailed after the first quarter and at halftime, but the Blazers had a 19-point third quarter and raced to a 53-39 boys basketball win over Harbor Springs.

Cameron Cavanaugh scored nine of his 13 points in Kalkaska's big third period and also finished the game with six assists. Austin Cooper scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Blazers.

Grayling 76

TC St. Francis 52

Traverse City St. Francis made one basket and one free throw for three points in the second quarter Friday against Grayling and that led to a 76-52 loss.

The minimal output crushed the Gladiators chances as Grayling scored 28 in the period.

Grayling also dominated from long range and at the free throw line. The Vikings made 9 of 14 3-pointers and attempted 44 free throws in the game.

Gus Danz was the only player in double figures for TCSF with 10 points. Marek Laucky and Michael Olm each scored nine.

Scout Tobin scored 20 for Grayling, Emmett Helsel and Carson Burmeister each had 12 points and Ben Nicholas added 11.

Elk Rapids 78

Charlevoix 62

Elk Rapids showed its offensive firepower in disposing of Charlevoix 78-62.

The Elks (2-0) scored 24 points in the opening period to get started on the right foot and led 49-33 at halftime as Charlevoix had an answer for the Elks post players.

Shae Somers led all scorers with 25 points for the Elks. Adam Trautman added 17 points and Miles Star contributed 11 points. 

Leading Charlevoix was KeNan Borths with 12 points and Will Telgenhof with 10.

Elk Rapids travels to Boyne City on Tuesday in a battle of two of the top teams in the Lake Michigan Conference.


TC St. Francis 67

Grayling 27

The Gladiators had four players score in double figures Friday, led by 16 from Juliana Philips, in a 67-27 girls basketball win over Grayling.

Traverse City St. Francis (4-0, 1-0 Lake Michigan Conference) also had 12 points from Sarah Carney, 11 from Sarah Chouinard and 10 from Suzanne Britten. Megan Knudsen had a team-high seven assists.

Sam Denno led Grayling with 11 points.

TC West 46

Cadillac 28

Traverse City West picked up a Big North Conference girls basketball win over Cadillac Friday, 46-28.

The Titans (2-0, 1-0 BNC) used a 26-7 first half to distance themselves before a close second half.

Katie Placek led TC West with 11 points, Hannah Mead chipped in nine and Paris Wagner had a team-high six rebounds.

Kylie Christensen had seven points to lead Cadillac.

Cadillac's junior varsity defeated West's, 38-29, and West's freshmen beat Cadillac's, 41-24.

Kylai Hewitt led West's JV with six points and nine rebounds, and Paige Carlson had 12 points for the freshmen, and teammate Paige McGerry notched a double-double with 10 points, 14 boards.

Gaylord 61

TC Central 52

Traverse City Central girls trailed Gaylord by nine points Friday and cut the lead to two with three minutes to play, but the Blue Devils picked up a 61-52 win, dropping the Trojans to 0-2.

Casey Korte paced Gaylord with 26 points.

Margot Woughter scored 16 points for the Trojans, and Abby Green added 10 points.

Gaylord won the junior varsity and freshmen matchups, 25-24 and 37-17, respectively.

Kalkaska 72

Harbor Springs 47

Kalkaska (4-0) received strong play from starters and reserves alike Friday in a 72-47 girls hoops victory over Harbor Springs.

A trio of Blazer starters — Taylor Kibby (15), McKenzie Wilkinson (12) and Micah Lajewski (10) — combined to score 37 points, and the bench trio of Sydney Perry (12), Sapphire Lajewski (8) and Kendra Grall (7) scored 27 to lead Kalkaska.

Shayllon Graney led Harbor Springs with 13 points, and Alexa Jensen-Thilbrick scored 11.

Gaylord St. Mary 62

Inland Lakes 18

Gaylord St. Mary (3-0, 2-0 Ski Valley Conference) blitzed Inland Lakes in the first half Friday, taking a 42-10 lead by halftime in its 62-18 girls basketball win.

Bekah Myler led GSM with 23 points and eight rebounds, while Alex Hunter chipped in 13 points and Giorgi Nowicki scored seven and posted a game-high 12 rebounds.

Vanessa Vandrie, Katie Byrne and Cloe Mallory each scored four points for Inland Lakes. 

Gaylord St. Mary will host Central Lake Wednesday.

Charlevoix 52

Elk Rapids 35

Charlevoix (2-1, 1-0 Lake Michigan Conference) picked up a Lake Michigan Conference win Friday over Elk Rapids 52-35.

Madeline Boss led the Rayders with 14 points and four steals, and teammate Alexis Tribfelner scored 12 points and had three steals. Leah Davis had a good all-around game with eight points, five steals and four rebounds.

Emilee Huber paced Elk Rapids with nine points.

Charlevoix will play at Eat Jordan Tuesday.

Bellaire 47

Onaway 20

Brandy O'Neal scored 16 points in Bellaire's 47-20 win over Onaway Friday in girls basketball. Teammate Lindsay Lampman added 12 points, and Tiarre Clovis scored six and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Lexi Szymoniak scored 10 points for Onaway.

Central Lake 53

Pellston 34

Neither team could find a scoring rhythm in the first half, but Central Lake (4-0) scored 36 in the second half to beat Pellston 53-34 in girls hoops.

Carrissa Boni scored 18 points, and Haley Patton had a double-double performance with 14 points and 14 rebounds for Central Lake.

Hannah Carter led Pellston with 13 points.

Central Lake will play at Gaylord St. Mary Wednesday.

Joburg 54

Forest Area 22

Johannesburg-Lewiston picked up a girls basketball win over Forest Area Friday with 20 points from Madison Showerman and another 10 by Haley McVannel. Showerman corralled eight rebounds.

Mady Ewing led the Cardinals with six of the team's 24 steals. 

Forest Area was led by Onna Hulwick's 11 points.

Joburg will play Inland Lakes on Wednesday.
