TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City Central welcomed the new wrestling season Wednesday night, hosting Traverse City St. Francis, Kingsley and Kalkaska in a series of dual matches.

The host Trojans defeated Kingsley 56-12 and topped Kalkaska 57-15. Kingsley and Kalkaska each earned a close victory over St. Francis, 30-18 and 30-14, respectively. The Kalkaska-Kingsley score was unreported.

Amadeus Vasquez (145), Austin Bills (152), John LaLonde (160), Josh Glezman (171), Moswen Kirksey (189) and Jason Ochoa (heavyweight) each picked up a pair of individual victories for Central, but it was freshman Carter Schmidt who dazzled Trojans coach Don Funk.

Schmidt only wrestled against Kalkaska at 125 pounds and pinned his opponent.

"He has a great natural ability and feel on the mat," Funk said. "He's picked up our technique and taken it to another level. He was dominant in every position against a tough Kalkaska wrestler."

Ochoa also had a nice night. Ochoa returns as Central's heavyweight from last season, following a his season at left tackle for the Central football team.

Funk said Ochoa has improved "ten fold" since last season.

"He's more physical, more aggressive," Funk said. "For a heavyweight he's powerful and pretty fast."

Luke Linder (14), Bill Crick (215), Ethan Ramsey (125), Kadin Crosley (215) and Gabe Weaver each picked up a Central victory.

St. Francis featured a trio of double winners despite its two losses. Gavin Wilmonth (152), Andy Simaz (160) and Brennan Nicodemus (171) all captured two wins apiece.

"Wilmonth is a freshman. He wrestled well for his first time out on the varsity stage," St. Francis coach Mike Simaz said. "He had one pin and one match he won in the last second on a takedown, 3-1. Andy wasn't really challenged in either one. Brennan got a pin in the first match and forfeit in the second match."

Ethan Hicks (119) and Justin Harlan (140) each went 2-0 on the day for Kalkaska.
