BATTLE CREEK — Extra innings brought more than a little extra for the Traverse City Pit Spitters.
Tied 9-9 after nine innings, the Pit Spitters put the first two batters — plus Drake Titus on the international tiebreaker rule — on base in the 10th Monday against the Battle Creek Bombers before Andrew Morrow batted in the winning runs with a one-out single to bring in two.
Jake Wilson followed with an RBI single for a three-run lead that Evan Gates held in the bottom of the 10th frame.
The win clinches the first-half title in the Great Lakes East Division, which also comes with a guaranteed playoff spot.
Morrow ended the game 3-for-6 with two doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored.
Wilson, Kam Smith and Christian Faust each drove in two runs.
The Spitters used four pitchers to notch the win, with only two of the nine runs earned.
Chase Gearing started and went 2.2 innings, with Pat Hohlfield adding on 2.1 frames and Will Buraconak throwing four innings of one-hit ball while striking out four before Gates came on to close it out in the 10th.
Traverse City (22-13) closes out the first half Tuesday at Battle Creek (13-21) before returning home to kick off the second half against Lakeshore (16-19) for two games starting Wednesday and then the Bombers for a pair starting Friday. Rockford (19-15) trails TC by 2.5 games in the Great Lakes East.
Andrew Hoffmann (4-0) draws the start Tuesday night in Battle Creek.
