AUBURN HILLS — Gaylord's Dominic LaJoie won his second state wrestling championship in as many years Saturday.

The Blue Devils sophomore won the 112-pound weight class in Division 2, handing Stevensville-Lakeshore's Austin Franco his first loss of the year in the finals with a 14-10 decision.

LaJoie, the son of Gaylord wrestling coach Jerry LaJoie, finishes the season 37-2. Franco is 49-1.

LaJoie won the 103-pound class last year with a 50-1 record.

Three other area wrestlers reached their respective championship matches, each falling in very close contests.

Benzie Central's Tim Smith dropped a 2-0 decision in the Division 3 title match at 285 pounds.

Smith closes out the season with a 35-4 record and was 3-1 at the state finals. All of his matches were tight decisions. He won an opening-round 3-1 match, followed by a pair of 3-2 victories to get to the title bout.

Gaylord's Tristan Gregory (189) and Trevor Giallombardo (103) were also runner-up in their weight classes.

Gregory lost a 1-0 state final match to St. Johns' Ty Wildmo to end his senior season 38-4.

Giallombardo finishes his junior campaign 27-3 after a 4-3 setback in the D2 state final.

Onaway senior Joe Traynham took fourth in the Division 4 112-pound weight class. Brendan Abrigo of Manchester won the third-place match with a 9-4 decision. Traynham ended the season 46-5.

Traverse City West junior Vincent Priante took eighth at 103 pounds in Division 1. Saline's Daniel Poupore won a 4-1 decision in the seventh-place match.

Priante (46-7) is the first TC West wrestler to place in the state finals since Phil Thiel in 2003.

Forest Area's Landon Elliott took fourth at 119 pounds in Division 4, and the junior also eclipsed the 100-win mark at the state finals. He closes out the season with a 36-9 record.

Gaylord junior Jon Martin (50-6) took fifth at 125 pounds in Division 2, winning his last match by pin in 3:26 over Lowell's Aaron Ward.

Charlevoix senior Sam Hovie won his final Division 4 160-pound match of the day 2-0 over Gobles' Mason Lawson to take fifth place and finish up with a 41-10 record for the season.

Benzie Central junior Devlin Philo took sixth in the Division 4 160-pound class, as Dundee's Gabe Heiserman won their fifth-place match with a 13-9 decision. Philo posted a 45-7 mark.

Elk Rapids senior Chris Gillissie claimed seventh place in Division 4 at 160 pounds with a 6-1 win over Sandusky's Trevor Willing. Gillissie wrapped up the season with a 50-5 mark.

Charlevoix sophomore Camden Alden placed eighth at 125 pounds in Division 4, falling short in a 9-8 decision in the seventh-place match to finish the season with a 45-15 record.

Petoskey sophomore Gage Paul also took eighth, dropping a 7-3 decision int he Division 2 140-pound seventh-place match to St. Clair Shores Lakeshore's Stephan Orlando. Paul posted a 37-12 record this year.



Frankfort 52

Elk Rapids 47

Frankfort won a non-conference make-up game with Elk Rapids 52-47 that was close throughout.

Neither team led or trailed by more than five points.

The Elks led by two after one quarter and the Panthers by a pair at halftime.

David Loney led Frankfort (18-2) with 15 points, while Nate Frieswyk had nine. The Panthers were 12 of 14 from the free-throw line in fourth quarter to help sew up the win.

Cole Walker had 16 for the Elks (15-5), Shae Somers contributed 12 and Adam Trautman 10.

It was senior night for Frankfort. The team's five seniors — Loney, Ryan Plumstead, Kenny Frieswyk, Brandon Kelly and Sam Stockdale — have a 69-27 record in their four years.
