TRAVERSE CITY -- After a slow start, the Lake Superior State men's basketball team seems to have things going in the right direction.

After opening the season with seven straight losses, LSSU won its second straight Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday, beating Ferris State 85-79.

Junior guard Mark Morse (Harbor Springs) led the way for the Lakers (2-7, 2-3 GLIAC) with 17 points. He also had four assists.

The trip to the Upper Peninsula wasn't a total loss for Ferris, which downed Lake Superior 85-76 in the women's contest.

Freshman guard Nicole Marshall (Frankfort) contributed six points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal for Lake Superior State (3-6, 1-4).

-- Bethel University reached the Division III semifinals in football before losing 62-14 to Mount Union. Senior defensive end Aaron Mills (TC Central) had five tackles, one for a loss, for the Royals (12-1).

For the season, Mills was the seventh leading tackler with 49 stops, 25 of which were solo. He had eight tackles for losses -- including four sacks for 25 yards -- four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and two pass break-ups.

Mills was named first team all-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

-- Calvin College beat Alma 73-41 in women's basketball on Saturday to remain undefeated in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Sophomore guard Amber Benthem (McBain Northern Christian) had six points while playing just seven minutes for Calvin (6-2, 3-0). Senior guard Nikki Zimmerman (TC West) added four assists, two rebounds and two steals for the Knights.

Sophomore Megan Hoblet (Cadillac) led Alma with 17 points, seven rebounds, one block and one steal. The Scots are 3-5 overall and 1-1 in the league.

-- Senior forward Erin Carney (TC St. Francis) had a season-high 12 points as No. 16 DePaul rolled to a 91-59 triumph over Chicago State on Wednesday.

Carney also had five rebounds and a steal for the Demon Deacons (8-0).

-- Aquinas College reached the final of the Robert Morris College men's basketball tournament before losing 75-65 to the host school on Saturday.

Senior Jeff Wierzbicki (Elk Rapids) had four points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals for the Saints (11-2).

Aquinas advanced with a 77-57 triumph over East-West on Friday as Wierzbicki had 11 points, seven rebounds, two assists and one steal.

-- Wisconsin-Whitewater jumped out to a 16-point halftime lead en route to a 74-53 triumph over Olivet on Sunday.

Junior forward Brandon McClary (Bellaire) had 11 points, eight rebounds and one block for Olivet (2-5). Freshman center Mike McClary (Bellaire) added seven points, seven rebounds, one assist and one block and senior John Zenner (Kingsley) five points, one rebound, one assist and one steal.

-- A late rally by the Western Michigan women's basketball team fell just short in a 72-68 loss to Temple on Saturday.

Sophomore forward Jenny Loney (Frankfort) came off the bench to score six points and pull down two rebounds for the Broncos (3-7). Freshman forward Brenna Banktson (Frankfort) had four points, four rebounds and two steals for WMU.

-- North Greenville saw its men's basketball record slide to 1-8 after a pair of losses last week.

Sophomore guard Austin Randel (McBain) had a game-high 23 points in a 94-73 loss to Carson-Newman on Thursday. Randel had 14 points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal in an 86-69 loss to Anderson on Tuesday.

-- Davenport University reached the final of the Marian women's basketball tournament before losing 63-57 to Trinity Christian College on Saturday. Junior forward Lynne Blomberg (Harbor Springs) had six points, two rebounds and one assist for Davenport (10-2).

Blomberg had five points and five rebounds in a 68-60 triumph over Bethel the night before.

-- The Augsburg (Minn.) women's hockey team heads into its holiday break after an 8-1 loss to Wisconsin-River Falls on Wednesday. The Auggies (1-10) actually scored first, just 41 seconds into the contest.

Senior defender Jackie Keller (TC West) assisted on the goal. It was the second assist of the season for the Augsburg captain.

The Augsburg women's hockey team will visit Europe Jan. 3-12 for a 10-day trip to Germany, Austria and Italy. The Auggies will play three games against local club teams.

-- The University of Rochester (N.Y.) men's basketball team, the No. 1 ranked team in Division III, improved to 9-0 with a 75-68 victory over St. John Fisher on Friday. Freshman guard Matt Murphy (Petoskey) had three points and one steal for the Yellowjackets.

-- Senior center Lindsay Lange (Manistee) had eight points in Hope College's 70-59 victory over North Central College on Saturday.

Lange also had three steals and two rebounds for the Dutch (7-0).

-- Oakland University sophomore Kevin Cataldo (Suttons Bay) placed fifth in the 3,000 (9:18) at the Grand Valley State University Holiday Open on Friday.

Saginaw Valley State sophomore Emily Nugent (Benzie Central) was seventh in the women's weight throw (13.98 meters). Grand Valley State freshman Weston Buchan (Glen Lake) was ninth in the men's long jump (6.25 meters).

-- The Calvin College men's basketball team returned to action on Saturday with an 80-47 romp over Trinity Christian College. Junior guard Mischa McCray (Harbor Light Christian) had three points for the Knights (5-3).
