Too much for Empire

Leelanau County as a whole does not have any formula stores. What makes Empire more unique? Empire is the headquarters of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. This would be a scar on the uniqueness of this community. What would visitors think when they arrive to visit the park headquarters and only a block or so away is a 5,000-square foot box store such as a dollar store?

Sure, Empire needs a grocery store but that could be done in an aesthetically pleasing way by a local entrepreneur. A dollar store located in this beautiful oasis would be a huge mistake for the community and the small business located here.

Protection training necessary

A couple of years ago our community held an informational meeting on child sexual abuse. It was hoped this would be followed with a meeting on prevention – but that has not yet occurred.

I'm writing because I recently learned of an excellent youth protection training program developed by the Boy Scouts of America, which now includes girls. (The training provides for this inclusion.)

Training covers sexual abuse, which Dr. Phil says is “a hard bell to un-ring” and which Victor Vieth (Zero Abuse Project) says is at the root of many of our social ills such as addictions. The program describes grooming – the subtle slowly progressive ways of desensitizing a child to abuse – which often involves porn, drugs or alcohol. The training includes safe use of social media and ways to prevent bullying.

Youth Protection Training is free of charge, although one must first set up an account. Allow one to two hours to complete the program. Successful completion of a test at the end of the training results in certification – and safer communities.

Although I'm tech challenged, I managed to navigate the site, complete the training and print my certificate. The web site is https://www.scouting.org/training/youth-protection/
