Youth, energy, passion, hope, and authenticity are but a few of Matt Morgan’s leadership traits. Matt possesses a superb command of the issues. Just watch him in debate. Even when sadly disparaged, he exhibited grace under pressure and returned to articulating solutions to advance the greater good. Matt’s first allegiance will be to the individual voters who put him in office; his top priorities will be theirs — affordable health care, meaningful work, quality education and training, and the underlying infrastructure which makes it all possible.

Believe the science

The recently published Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report is a clarion call for action on climate but we’ve pushed the snooze button on the issue once again. We need to immediately draw down the levels of greenhouse gases (GHG) in our atmosphere.

Because our President continues to be in denial on this issue, Congress must act. Republicans are slowly coming on board but at a snails pace.

Vote for Matt Morgan. He has refused super PAC money from the big GHG emitters so will be free to vote with our interests instead of theirs.

On illegal immigration

My father-in-law was inducted into the U.S. Army during WWII while his wife was pregnant. He came home after the war and was greeted by the curious eyes of my wife, who was 2 years old at the time. The family said “Sharon, this is your daddy.” She ran into the bedroom and came back with his picture in hand. “This is my daddy,” she said.

This is a lesson to all those who decry the separation of foreign families who defy our laws and the Constitution. They become illegal aliens immediately, since the first thing they did entering the U.S. was break one of our basic laws.

How many Americans who served in the military were separated from their families? They were heroes. Yet the media and democrats defend the illegal actions of an alien mob ignoring the patriotic citizens who “Make America Great” with their dedication, duty and honor to our Constitution.

Without laws, we would be under mob rule, as we are now witnessing on our southern border! Now it is our turn to protect our citizens from the Trojan horse approaching our border hoping to undermine our resolve by coercion, intimidation and deception! Build the wall and all will be well!

GOP doesn’t care

Expired Line 5, owned by Enbridge, is on the bottom of the Straits of Mackinac, breaking our Native Americans’ rights. Pipeline 5 spilled 29 times in its history (according to a National Wildlife Federation researcher). Enbridge has lied about spills and increasing the pressure. Now, they threaten the freshwater sources of millions for another eight years while a partial tunnel is built on Gov. Snyder’s OK. How will you vote, Schuette? Shut it down.

Our neighbors receive drinking water directly from the Great Lakes. MI’s economy depends on our environment. Our GOP is promoting pollution of air (coal processing); land (pesticides on and in food); water (Flint’s disease and lead deaths) and pig sewage in Great Lakes — all within dense populations. Even Sen. Schmidt polluted a kids’ fountain with sewer poop by breaking a critical law of inspection. Cost taxpayers BIG.

Snyder’s cost to taxpayers is beyond belief. He waited 1.4 years to warn Flintians of lead in drinking water. He whines “I’m responsible,” but the millionaire doesn’t pay his lawyer bills. He cut off Flint’s free bottled water and stopped replacing household pipes so he can claim he has a balanced budget! Majority GOP reps and senators didn’t say peep to this, including Bergman and Inman. They do not care.

Vote for Frugé

I am writing to support Melissa Frugé for state representative. Melissa is among a group of young women who are smart, energetic and, above all, kind and inclusive. She supports access to healthcare for all and improved public school systems. Her opponent Triston Cole once supported a bill that would require legal immigrants to carry drivers licenses different-looking from those of other residents. We want to end the days of profiling, not encourage it. Vote Melissa Frugé for a new and forward-looking Michigan!

Being an American

The year was 1907 and Theodore Roosevelt gave a speech concerning his concepts about immigrants and being an American.

“In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilated himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person’s becoming in every facet an American and nothing but an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. We have room for but one flag. The American flag. We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language and we have room for but one sole loyalty to the American people.”

It was a thoughtful, inspiring speech for good will and unity. Now our leader in the White House, reads a thoughtful script in times of tragedy. He follows with demeaning tweets, playing the victim, blaming the cause on the Media. Vote November 6.

Vote O’Neil, Morgan

Please vote for those who will support our fresh water, clean air, renewable energy and our future climate. Evaluate candidates for their integrity and history of actually doing what they say they will do. This year with Enbridge’s Line 5 in the Straits, exploitation of freshwater for private gain, promotion of fossil fuels while climate change threatens our future, choices are clear.

Dan O’Neil is an honest man with such a credible life history, as is Matt Morgan. Each of these men will go to the House in Lansing and the Congress in Washington to work for all of us.

Pollution solution

In the final gubernatorial debate last week, Schuette and Whitmer clashed on the appropriate approach to addressing climate change. As we look beyond the election, we must recognize that there is a bipartisan solution to the climate threat that would not only beat Paris Climate Agreement emissions targets but also would protect Michigan jobs and the economy.

The Baker-Shultz Plan, authored last year by Secretaries of State James Baker and George Shultz, is a simple price on carbon dioxide pollution with all revenues immediately rebated back to Americans in the form of equal dividend checks. The overwhelming majority of economists agree that this is the best way to reduce emissions. A transparent, predictably-rising fee on carbon dioxide provides the certainty needed for an efficient, safe transition to clean energy.

Supported by industrial leaders (GM and First Solar) and leading environmental organizations (The Nature Conservancy and Conservation International), the Baker-Shultz Plan is broadly supported across the political spectrum. My organization, Students for Carbon Dividends, is among a bipartisan coalition of student groups, including 23 Republican groups, that have united around this common-sense solution. Let’s inspire the Whitmers and Schuettes of this country to do the same.

Community first

On Nov. 6 we need to re-elect Dan Lathrup for Grand Traverse County Commissioner.

Lathrop wants what is good of our community first and foremost. His focus is always looking to our future generation by protecting our environment and not leaving our debt for our children to manage. He is honest and hardworking and always present. Please support him with your vote.
