• To PeopleForBikes, which recently announced a $7,500 community grant for the Grand Traverse Traffic Garden + Pump Track. Youth can learn bicycle handling and riding skills on the traffic garden with a miniature street at the Grand Traverse County Civic Center. Additionally, Norte Youth Cycling offers programs for schools and loans bikes to anyone in need. The grant is funded through the Employee Pro Purchase program.
  • To 100+ Women Who Care Grand Traverse and Leelanau County members, who recently selected the Inland Seas Education Association, a nonprofit in Suttons Bay, to receive a $10,000 donation.

The funds go toward scholarships for school groups to attend programs and stay in the new dormitory.

Bernie Friedrich, senior vice president of golf operations and sales at Boyne Resorts, was selected as the recipient of the 2019 Bill Strausbaugh Award for his outstanding integrity, character and leadership through a commitment to mentoring PGA professionals.

Kevin McKinley, director of golf at Treetops Resort and Michigan PGA president, was selected as the recipient of the 2019 Horton Smith Award for his outstanding contributions to professional education.

Scott Wilson, a PGA Teaching Professional at Bay Meadows Golf Course, was selected as the 2019 Youth Player Development Award winner.

To Michael John Sheehan, of Cedar, whose “Words to the Wise” radio program, hosted by WTCM NewsTalk 580, broadcast its 900th show in a live performance at the City Opera House last week. Sheehan, a.k.a. “The Professor,” a former monk, a former English professor, and the author of two dictionaries has been a weekly guest on WTCM’s Ron Jolly Show every Tuesday since 2001.
