TOLEDO, Ohio -- Rescuers who plucked 134 stranded fishermen off a huge ice floe in Lake Erie want tougher penalties for those who ignore obvious dangers like cracks in the ice and high-wind warnings.

As it stands, they can't recover the rescue costs from the fishermen, even the ones who built a makeshift bridge across the cracking ice so that they could reach a favorite fishing spot.

Helicopters from Coast Guard stations in Traverse City, Detroit and St. Clair Shores assisted in the rescue.
