TRAVERSE CITY — Healing energy and alternative health remedies will make their debut at the Traverse City Senior Center this month.

The session, called “Get Your Spark Back” will be held twice, once at 4 p.m. on March 14 and 6 p.m. on March 22.

It's the first time the center has hosted an event like this, but curiosity and interest spurred it forward, said Traverse City Senior Center Manager Lori Wells.

“It seems like people are asking more and more questions without Western medicine,” Wells said. “It’s helping people explore natural health remedies to improve well being.”

Carolyn Schwab, occupational therapist and owner of Sound Therapeutics, will introduce concepts of energy healing and medicine.

“The focus is the energy that we have circulating inside our bodies and around us and the ways we can work with it,” Schwab said.

The events will include a basic overview and hands-on elements, like healing touch, she said.

“We’ll be playing with the different energies,” she said. “It’s experimental. We need to start moving in different ways.”

Energy healing can improve physical health, but also mental health, Schwab said. She has studied the law of attraction, which states that what people think about is what they will get.

“A lot of our mental health issues are related to how we think about what we have going on in our lives,” Schwab said. “A new perspective is needed to feel better emotionally.”

Schwab said alternate methods are becoming popular, but Traverse City needs to be brought up to speed.

“I think now is a big time for people looking at their health care to find natural, holistic ways,” she said. “A lot of people are afraid of alternative health because they don’t know a lot.”

Wells added that if enough people show an interest, the Senior Center can expand their offerings to focus more on this topic.

Wells said energy health is new to her, so she will be learning alongside those who attend the beginning classes.

“Knowledge is power,” Wells said. “It’s good for people to have all kinds of options so they can make their own choices.”

The “Get Your Spark Back” at 4 p.m. March 14 and 6 p.m. March 22 at the Traverse City Senior Center. People should register for one introductory class, not both.

A more in-depth, three-week series begins at 3 p.m. April 11 at Twin Lakes Fitness in the Gilbert Lodge. The cost is $5 per week for members of the Senior Center Network and $10 for non-members. Registration: 231-922-4911 or dmikowski@grandtraverse.org.
