TRAVERSE CITY — Police on Tuesday released the name of a 71-year-old Ohio man killed in a hit-and-run on U.S. 31 North near Four Mile Road Saturday.

Sham Sunder Suri was visiting the area from his Ottawa Hills, Ohio, home with family, according to Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Department Capt. Chris Clark.

The man attempted to cross the road near Sugar Beach Resort Hotel around 10:15 p.m. — as dusk fell — when he was struck by a vehicle headed west toward Traverse City.

He succumbed to his injuries several hours later at Munson Medical Center.

Police have identified a suspect in the case, who Clark said parked a Chevy Equinox at a nearby business and fled the scene on foot. Several witnesses confronted him at the time, Clark added.
