South Manitou water levels cancel ferry

LELAND — High water levels at the South Manitou Island dock forced the cancellation of Thursday morning's Manitou Island Transit ferry.

Megan Munoz, co-owner of Manitou Island Transit, said it is the "third or fourth time" this year that water over the wood dock on South Manitou Island has caused a cancellation.

South Manitou Island is part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

Munoz said wind conditions caused water — already high in Lake Michigan this summer — to top the dock.

Manitou Island Transit raised its dock about a foot earlier this year, according to Munoz and Summer Meyer, assistant to the executive director of the Fishtown Preservation Society.
