TRAVERSE CITY — Predicted frigid temperatures and gusty winds prompted North American Vasa organizers to call off Saturday morning's Junior Vasa race.

"At this time, all races scheduled for tomorrow are a go, with the exception of the children's race, the Junior Vasa," Vasa President Mark Esper said Friday afternoon.

The Junior Vasa is for skiers 12 and younger, and Esper said there's no reason for young kids to be out in the chilly temperatures.

"We are aware of the weather conditions. We continue to monitor conditions," he said.

Gregg Bird, Grand Traverse County's emergency management coordinator, warned residents of whiteout conditions and plummeting temperatures expected for the weekend.

He expects wind chill values will range from 25 below to 40 below all day Saturday and into Sunday, with the worst conditions expected Saturday morning through mid-afternoon.

Traverse City could also see up to six inches of snow tonight, Bird said.

Esper said he'll issue another weather update on Saturday's Vasa at 8 p.m. tonight.
