Police: Two dead of gunshot wounds at Hotel Indigo

Two people were found dead Sunday evening at Hotel Indigo in Traverse City, just blocks from the National Cherry Festival.

TRAVERSE CITY — Police called to Hotel Indigo Sunday afternoon discovered two people dead from gunshot wounds.

UPDATE: Police ID local couple in hotel shooting

Hotel staff contacted police, said Traverse City Police Capt. Jim Bussell, after finding a room barricaded from the inside after checkout time. Knocking at the door drew no response.

Officers forced their way into the room to find the bodies and also recover three guns, Bussell said, around 1 p.m.

The cause of death appeared to be a single gunshot wound to each person, he said.

Bussell said around 6:45 p.m. Sunday that police were in the process of positively identifying the pair and contacting family and had just cleared the scene. He added that the bodies would be sent to Western Michigan University on Monday morning for autopsies for an official cause of death.

Bussell could not say when the deaths had occurred, but said police have identified witnesses claiming to have seen the pair on Saturday evening.

The incident took place just off Grandview Parkway in downtown Traverse City, just blocks from National Cherry Festival grounds. Police presence has been heightened in the city to accommodate the event.

Guests wafted in and out of the hotel and the street remained abuzz with Cherry Fest revellers in the hours after police left the scene.

A hotel manager did not immediately return calls for comment.
