TRAVERSE CITY — Munson Medical Center's president Al Pilong will leave in April for a job in Virginia.

Ed Ness, President and CEO of hospital parent organization Munson Healthcare, said Pilong recently informed the organization he's resigning on March 31. Pilong will be taking a job within the University of Virginia hospital system, Ness said. It's also a chance for Pilong to be closer to family in Virginia.

"This was a combination of a chance for him to get closer to his family and to have a leadership position in health care back in Virginia," Ness said.

Pilong was president of a hospital in Winchester, Va., and senior vice president of a six-hospital system prior to starting as Munson Medical Center's president in February 2013. He took over for Kathleen McManus, who retired after running the hospital for the interim starting in 2010.

Ness said Pilong will work with him and the Munson Medical Center board on an interim plan. Derk Pronger will serve as interim CEO while Munson Healthcare searches nationwide for a new hospital president, Ness said. Pronger currently is the hospital's chief operating officer.

That search should take several months to complete, Ness said. He doesn't have a target date in mind for making a hire and wants to ensure the process yields the right candidate who's committed to the community and task.

"Change is always difficult but we have a good management team in place, and we're looking forward to making sure that we have a strong leadership team into the future," he said.
