TRAVERSE CITY — A 71-year-old man was killed after being struck by a car Saturday night.
The driver of a Chevy Equinox fled on foot after leaving his car at a business near the crash site, said Capt. Chris Clark of the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office.
The vehicle is in custody but the driver is not as of Sunday afternoon, he said.
The car was traveling westbound on U.S. 31 North and the 71-year-old man was attempting to cross on foot near Four Mile Road, said Clark.
The crash took place at approximately 10:15 p.m., he said.
The pedestrian was taken to Munson Medical Center and died of his injuries at 2:45 a.m. Sunday.
The driver pulled into a parking lot and was confronted by potential witnesses, said Clark.
Anyone near Ruby Tuesday’s or Smoke and Porter Public House at the time who might have confronted the driver is asked to call Central Dispatch at 231-922-4550, he said.
The sheriff’s office, Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department and East Bay Ambulance responded to the crash, which is still under investigation, said Clark.
