BENZONIA A man allegedly responsible for a crash that killed a Benzie Central High School teacher surrendered to authorities.

John Lee Burchett, 26, turned himself in and was arrested Thursday, Benzie County Undersheriff Rory Heckman said.

He was arraigned on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death, a 15-year felony, driving with a suspended license causing death, also a 15-year felony, and third-offense drunken driving, a five-year felony.

A court spokeswoman said Burchett was taken to jail following the arraignment. A preliminary examination is scheduled for Jan. 10 at 1:30 p.m.

Burchett's sport utility vehicle crossed the center line on Benzie County's Cinder Road Sept. 24 and slammed head-on into a car driven by Katherine Wolterink, 60. Wolterink died in the crash.

Burchett, who was seriously injured, wasn't considered a flight risk by authorities, Heckman previously said. They waited for him to recover so he could handle incarceration.
