Youth hunter Dozer Morgan, center, and his dad watch as Mancelona Buck Pole volunteer Brad Moore (left) hoists Dozer’s 183-pound buck onto the pole on opening day. Dozer was hunting early in Kalkaska county when he and his dad spotted several does and a small buck coming toward them. “My dad saw a big buck come in and it scared off all the other deer,” Dozer said. “I took the shot and it went down.” Dozer said he was happy and excited, and as of mid-afternoon Tuesday, his was in the lead in the Buck Pole contest. Dozer’s hunting luck began six weeks ago when he and his dad were bear hunting in the Upper Peninsula, and Dozer shot a 300-pound bear. Mancelona Buck Pole’s contest wraps up Thursday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. when prizes are awarded.
