TRAVERSE CITY — Firefighters quickly contained a Kalkaska blaze.
A pile of construction debris caught fire in the Waste Management building’s recycling center Sunday in Kalkaska. Kalkaska Township Fire Department officials responded around 9:30 p.m. and quickly doused the flames, preventing the fire from causing any damage to the building, other than a small amount of smoke damage.
Fire Department Chief Derek Hogerheide said firefighters used equipment to quickly pull apart the pile of debris — containing construction materials like lumber and other items — and extinguish the flames.
Separating the materials makes it hard to investigate and search for a cause of the fire, Hogerheide said. The debris came from a roll-off recycling container and he said there is a possibility a user put something flammable inside.
“Who knows what may have been in there,” he said.
The building was empty at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.
Kalkaska County EMS officials and firefighters from the Clearwater Township Fire and Coldsprings Excelsior Fire and Rescue departments also responded to the scene.
