FIFE LAKE — Investigators on Wednesday identified a man who died off the shores of Fife Lake as 59-year-old Bob Jay Rooks Jr.

Swimmers found the South Boardman man beneath the surface of the lake’s swim area near town around 2:30 p.m., said Fife Lake Springfield Fire Chief Scott Tinker.

He’d visited the beach with his grandchildren.

“He went down to get a ball or a toy,” Tinker said. “And when he went down, he never came back up.”

He was pulled from the water and passersby administered first aid to no avail as first responders raced to the scene.

The man was pronounced dead at Kalkaska Hospital.

A police report is still being completed and investigators await results from the medical examiner, said Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Department Capt. Chris Clark.
