TRAVERSE CITY — An inmate serving time for an embezzlement conviction faces an additional criminal charge after police said he sexually assaulted his cellmate at Grand Traverse County’s jail.
Cory Michael Gould, 41, of Traverse City, on Monday was charged with fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct after his cellmate said he awoke in the night to Gould’s hands sliding up his groin. If convicted, the high-court misdemeanor could keep Gould behind bars for another two years.
Traverse City police Lt. Steve Drzewiecki previously said Gould’s cellmate — a 23-year-old man serving a one-year sentence — yelled at Gould, who left the cell and ended the altercation. Dispatch logs noted the report was made just after 2 a.m. on March 8.
Gould denied he intended to assault the sleeping inmate, Drzewiecki said previously. He told officers his cellmate was talking in his sleep so he entered the cell and shook the man’s leg. Surveillance footage showed Gould standing nearby but was inconclusive in regards to the suspected assault, according to court records.
