A 1942 aerial image of the U.S. Naval Station in Traverse City. The site after World War II became the U.S. Coast Guard Station. The personnel at the naval station were involved in drone development and testing. Michigan was considered a safe area for such activity. It was far away from either coast and possible bombings or invasion, but near large bodies of water over which such drones could be tested.
