Soldano

Psychology major Sierra Schreiber, of Grayling, is writing for the Odyssey student organization at Saginaw Valley State University. The Odyssey gives student writers an online platform to discuss any topic they choose.

Kalkaska County Sheriff Patrick Whiteford recently completed the Michigan Sheriffs’ Association New Sheriffs’ Leadership Institute, a two-week training program designed for newly-elected sheriffs. Topics included roles, road patrol, corrections, crime victims’ rights and budgets. Whiteford was appointed in November 2015.

The following students recently graduated from the Michigan State Police 131st Trooper Recruit School in Lansing: Jared Orban, of Suttons Bay, is stationed at Rockford; Matthew Topp, of Gaylord, will work out of Alpena; Thomas Dihle, of Alpena, is posted at Niles; Michael Oliver, also of Alpena, will be stationed at Calumet; and Lake Ann resident Trevor Baesch and Kingsley native Justin Lidak are posted at Gaylord.

Benjamin Colburn, of Traverse City, qualified for the fall 2016 Dean’s List at Belmont University in Tennessee. Colburn was selected based on his GPA and number of credit hours.

The Kiwanis Club of Traverse City recognized Shad Soldano as Student of the Month for the week of Dec. 20. Soldano, a senior at Kingsley High School, is a member of the National Honor Society, K-Town Youth Advisory Group and student council. He has participated with the GT Bay Swim Team (team captain), Kingsley High School Track and Field, snowboard and ski club, STAND Club (anti-bullying) and Outdoor Adventure Club. He was chosen to attend the Rotary Life Leadership Conference and maintains a 3.75 GPA. Soldano plans to pursue a degree in pathology and possibly forensics at Michigan State University or Northern Michigan University.

Kendra Benak, of Traverse City, has been named to the fall 2016 Dean’s List at Southeast Missouri State University. Benak was selected for earning at least a 3.75 GPA and completing the minimum 12 credit hours.

Kalkaska Middle School recently achieved International Baccalaureate World School status. It is the third middle school to gain the title for a Middle Years Programme for northern Michigan.

Brianne Peterson, of Traverse City, recently was named to the fall 2016 Honors List at Graceland University in Iowa.

Irene Crandell, of Petoskey, was named to the fall 2016 President’s List at Graceland University in Iowa. She received this distinction because she earned a 4.0 GPA.
