TRAVERSE CITY — Jurors are deliberating the fate of Jason Anthony Ryan, 36, who's charged in a Kalkaska murder case that dates back 18 years.
Authorities allege Ryan raped and killed Kalkaska resident Geraldine Montgomery, who was found dead of asphyxiation in the trunk of her car in 1996.
He was charged with the crime a year ago after DNA found at the scene was retested and matched his DNA.
Ryan initially was not considered a suspect. Another man, Jamie Lee Peterson, 40, was convicted of the crimes in 1998 after he offered several varied confessions.
Peterson was freed from jail after the retested DNA samples excluded him.
Ryan's trial in the 46th Circuit Court began Dec. 8. Jurors heard closing arguments and began deliberation Wednesday.
