GOOD HART "" An Emmet County resident called police after finding a bloodied man knocking on the door and an unfamiliar backhoe in the driveway.

Sheriff Peter Wallin said deputies responded at 4 a.m. Sunday to a house on South Lakeshore Drive in Friendship Township. He said Rory Diamond, 18, of Alanson, fled the scene when emergency responders arrived.

Wallin said Diamond told the homeowner he'd been assaulted and needed help getting a ride. The homeowner chose to call 911 instead.

Police searched the area and found a house on Townline Road had been broken into. Also missing: a backhoe.

"Apparently he was at a party but then he left. He was walking through the woods when he was assaulted, but he doesn't know who did it. That is being investigated," Wallin said.

Diamond stole the backhoe as a way to get out of the area after being attacked, he said.

"Usually they take cars, not backhoes. He went to this house and there was a backhoe with the keys in it," Wallin said.

Diamond had been drinking at a party on Boynton Road and stopped at a house with lights on to ask for help, he added.

Deputy Josh Gladu found Diamond in the Good Hart area and arrested him for several offenses, including unlawful driving away of a motor vehicle, home invasion and minor in possession of alcohol.

Diamond is in custody, held at the Emmet County Jail in Petoskey on a $2,500 bond.

Officers with the Michigan State Police, Harbor Springs Police Department and the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians Police Department assisted.
