TRAVERSE CITY -- Cherryland Humane Society took the top spot in this year's annual Shop Your Community Day fundraiser.

The Downtown Traverse City Association organizes the charitable event, during which a slew of downtown merchants donate 15 percent of their sales on a specific day to local nonprofit organizations and charities chosen by customers. This year's total donation was nearly $14,000, while the five-year total is more than $60,000.

"You help us, we help you and it's a win-win," Todd McMillen, DTCA president, told nonprofit representatives on Thursday when the donations were turned over at the City Opera House.

This year Cherryland received $1,247, the American Cancer Society received $1,167, Boots for Kids received $824, the Father Fred Foundation collected $663 and Child and Family Services received $645.

"It definitely helps out this year because our overall donations are down," said Don Schmuckal, Boots for Kids' president.

The organization already gave out more than 500 pairs of boots this season to children primarily between kindergarten and fifth grade. More requests are expected yet this winter, Schmuckal said.

This year's total donation of $13,900 is an increase over last year by about $900, but down from the previous year's nearly $15,000 raised.

Around 50 downtown businesses participated to benefit dozens of local nonprofit organizations. The event was Nov. 14, and is set for Nov. 13 next year.
