TRAVERSE CITY — The Northwest Michigan Community Action Agency will mark its 17th year of free tax preparation starting in February.

The service is available to low-to-moderate income individuals and families, senior citizens, those with limited English-speaking proficiency and persons with disabilities. Appointments as well as limited-drop off services begin in February and run through April.

The NMCAA program is staffed by volunteers trained by the Internal Revenue Service who prepare taxes electronically. In addition to the service, it is free to file both state and federal taxes.

The tax preparation volunteers help clients qualify for tax credits like the earned income or property tax credit.
