Pine Hill event benefits Elk Rapids library

TRAVERSE CITY — Pine Hill Nursery, 886 US-31 in Kewadin, will donate a portion of proceeds from May 16-19 sales of plants and supplies to the Elk Rapids Library Capital Campaign.

A family-friendly Secret Garden Party on Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. will kick off the fundraiser. Special activities will include live music, snacks and wine tasting with WaterFire Vineyards, according to a release. A children’s version of the classic book “The Secret Garden” will be available for purchase, with proceeds going the capital campaign.

Browsing and shopping throughout the evening are encouraged, and five golden keys will be hidden among the plants in the gardens and greenhouses. Each key can be redeemed for a door prize. One key and one prize per person.

The fundraiser will continue Friday and Saturday 2-4 p.m. and Sunday 1-4 p.m. WaterFire tastings and the “Hidden Garden” book sale will be available each day, along with the chance to find a gold key/door prize.

Psychedelic Cat Grass set for May 17 release

ELK RAPIDS — The 24-hour clock begins a minute after midnight.

Short’s Brewing Company will release Psychedelic Cat Grass beginning at 12:01 a.m. on May 17 at its production facility in Elk Rapids. According to a release from Shorts, Psychedelic Cat Grass is packaged and distributed with a 24-hour period, making it “the freshest India Pale Ale imaginable.”

Distribution will occur throughout the day on May 17 in the state and in other select locations in the Great Lakes region. Full distribution in the region and Florida will take place the following week.

The beer also will be available “right off the line” in the Short’s Pull Barn at the Elk Rapids production facility shortly after midnight.

According to Short’s, this is the fourth annual release of the IPA, which has 7.6 percent alcohol by volume.
