Benzie Business After Hours set

THOMPSONVILLE — The Benzie County Chamber of Commerce will hold its April Business After Hours event on April 18 from 5-7 p.m. at The 231 Bar & Grill, located at 17170 Vondra Road in Thompsonville.

Scheduled are hors d'oeuvres, a 50/50 raffle, door prizes and a $600 member raffle. A designated member representative must be present to win.

Admission is a $5 donation. The April event is sponsored by The 231 Bar & Grill, Crystal Adventures and Crystal Adventures Vacation Properties.

Business After Hours event slated

ELK RAPIDS — The Elk Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce will hold a Business After Hours event on April 18 from 5-7 p.m. at the Blue Heron Gallery, located at 131 Ames St.

Green Elk Rapids is the host and will provide updates on the past year as well as the group's plans for 2019.

Petoskey chamber to host expo

PETOSKEY — The Petoskey Regional Chamber of Commerce will host its largest networking event of the year, the 2019 Business Expo, on April 18, from 5 to 8 p.m., in Ovation Hall of Odawa Casino. Exhibitors include 76 businesses and organizations.

The event is open to the public. Admission is $10 and includes hors d’oeuvres from Odawa Casino and the opportunity to sample food from seven "Taste of Petoskey" restaurants.

Business plan workshop scheduled

TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Score chapter will hold a free business workshop on April 23 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. "Building Your Business Plan — Marketing" will be held in the McGuire Community Room at the Traverse Area District Library on Woodmere Avenue.

The April 23 workshop is the third in a series designed to help develop a comprehensive business plan. The event will review branding, avoiding marketing mistakes, finding the right marketing mix/channels and developing a clear pitch.

Business After Hours set for April 24

BELLAIRE — The Bellaire Chamber of Commerce has a Business After Hours event scheduled for April 24 from 5:30-7 p.m. Yoga Bellaire will host the event at Hello Vino, 112 N. Bridge St.

There will be free appetizers and a cash bar. Participants should bring a business card for a chance to win a prize.

Habitat information session scheduled

LAKE LEELANAU — Habitat for Humanity-Grand Traverse Region will host a free informational session on its home ownership program on April 30 at 6 p.m. in the Lower Community Room at the Leelanau County Government Center in Lake Leelanau.

Habitat officials will discuss the process, answer questions and have applications available to select a homeowner for a two-bedroom, 1-bathroom renovated home in Lake Leelanau.

Building skills showdown event May 1

TRAVERSE CITY — The Home Builders Association of the Grand Traverse Area will host a Building Skills Showdown on May 1.

Students from the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District's Career Tech Center and Northwestern Michigan College each built structures that will be on display during the TBAISD Career Tech Spring Expo on May 1, 4-7:30 p.m.

Career Tech students built a cottage-style multi-use building. NMC students created an infrared dry sauna with a changing area. Both structures are fully insulated with electrical.

The structures will be raffled off at 7:15 p.m. during the Expo. Raffle tickets are $20 each. Raffle proceeds will go toward future HBA scholarships. More information is available at

Meijer donates $2M to program

GRAND RAPIDS — The Meijer family donated more than $2 million to its Simply Give program for food pantries.

The donation will be divided equally between the more than 400 food pantries participating in the program.

The donation means nearly $48 million has been raised since the program's inception in 2008. The Meijer Simply Give program set a record with donations of more than $8.5 in 2018.

During the campaign, customers can purchase a $10 Simply Give card at checkout and the donation is converted into a Meijer food-only gift card and donated to a local food pantry associated with that store.

GRAND RAPIDS — Nominations are open for the second annual Better Business Bureau Trust Award.

According to a release from the Better Business Bureau Serving Western Michigan, the 2019 Trust Award recipient should be "a leader in their field who embodies honesty, integrity, transparency and is someone who has an impact on their organization and community."

Consumers earns national honor

JACKSON — Consumers Energy earned the Energy Star Partner of the Year — Sustained Excellence Award.

It's the seventh time in the last eight years Consumers Energy has received the national honor for energy efficiency programs, according to a release. The award is presented by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Consumers Energy started its current energy efficiency programs in 2009.

USDA funds available for bee habitats

EAST LANSING — The U.S. Department of Agriculture has conservation financial assistance funds available for farmers and forest landowners to improve food sources for honey bees on private lands in Michigan.

Applications must be submitted to the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service by May 17 for the current funding cycle.

The financial assistance to boost available food for honey bees by planting wildflowers, native grasses and cover crops to provide high value food for honey bees.
