Do you recognize the building in this circa-1895 image? It was built in 1892 and originally housed a saddle, harness and leather-goods store. It was initially owned by John Beadle, whose name can be seen in raised lettering on the upper floors of the Front Street facility. That lettering survives to this day. In recent years, the building housed several businesses in downtown Traverse City. These images are provided by the Traverse Area Historical Society in collaboration with the Traverse Area District Library. Please email questions or comments to contact@traversehistory.org. This historical photo and those printed in the following seven weeks are part of a series of plaques titled “Then & Now,” developed by TAHS, TADL and the Traverse City Arts Commission Public Art Fund with additional funding from the Downtown Traverse City Foundation.
