Maris E. Lutzke, of Beulah, and Abigail Machin, of Traverse City, made the president’s list during the fall 2018 term at Northwood University.

Emily Walton, of Traverse City, was inducted into the Dayton C. Miller Honor Society at Baldwin Wallace University. Walton is studying exercise science.

Kiwanis Club of Traverse City named Cole Soldano Student of the Month for the week of April 16. Soldano, a senior at Kingsley High School, is a member of Student Council and National Honor Society. He participated in basketball, soccer and track. He received the American Citizenship Award and Academic Achievement Award. Soldano maintains a 3.7 GPA and plans to attend Northwestern Michigan College for two years, and then study nursing at Michigan State University. He hopes to become a nurse anesthetist.

Three area students earned scholarships from the National Writers Series, in partnership with the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation. Each student received $1,000 for college.

Abby Riffell, a senior at Elk Rapids High School, earned the William R. Montgomery Award for fiction writing. Molly Stadler, a senior at Grand Traverse Academy, received the Robert and Marcy Branski Award in poetry. Stadler is also a Front Street Writers student. Seth Kirby, a junior at Interlochen Arts Academy, obtained the Leslie Lee Award for his nonfiction piece.

The Friendly Book Investigators team won the National Writers Series’ fourth annual Battle of the Books competition. The winning team included Immaculate Conception School students Sophia Barbas, Cooper Boyle, Becky Lechota, Mara Niemi, Gabrielle Sebastian and Porter Stevenson. Eight teams from the school participated this year.

Three writings from the National Writers Series Poetry Workshops were selected for publication in the 2019 NWS Literary Journal. The winning poems are “Goodnight World” by Aveelee Frantz, Traverse Heights Elementary; “My Dog” by Thomas Monroe, Traverse Heights Elementary; and “The Wet Blizzard” by Nataliya Gorokhovskiy, Blair Elementary.

Connor J. Bebb, of Traverse City, recently was named the 2019 Presidential Scholar in environment and sustainability at Western Michigan University. Bebb is studying freshwater science and sustainability and works with the nonprofit Circle of Blue. He also received the WMU Distinguished Community College Award.

Denielle Bohland, of Interlochen, was recently inducted into the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society at Graceland University. Juniors and seniors are accepted if they place in the top 10 percent in their class.

Mary Somse, a Buckley educational assistant, was honored at the 2019 Outstanding Persons in Education Banquet. Deb Hartzell, of Buckley, and True Hardware in Fife Lake earned the Friends of Education distinction. The event is sponsored by the 15-B Coordinating Council, made up of Michigan Education Association members from Baldwin, Buckley, Cadillac, Evart, Forest Area, Kingsley, Manton, Marion, McBain, Mecosta-Osceola ISD, Mesick, Pine River and Reed City.
