Barry Jones of JonesCraft Timberworks uses an ax to hand hew hemlock logs with dovetail corners for restoration work on the Kraitz Cabin along Bohemian Road near Maple City. The cabin, which is the oldest structure on the mainland in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, was built between 1856 and 1860, and is being restored by Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear a nonprofit partner of the National Park. The work is being done in the traditional manner in which the cabin was built, which Jones said was especially hard work when they started the first 20-foot log. “There were two of us, and we almost died,” said Jones. “After that, we decided to lace up our boots a little tighter. They were doing it for survival, they weren’t getting paid.”
