TRAVERSE CITY — A rider died Saturday of cardiac arrest during the Iceman Cometh mountain bike race, according to race director Steve Brown.

The rider went down with about 5K to go in the 30-mile race from Kalkaska to Timber Ridge.

Brown said medical personnel on the scene tried to revive the man using a defibrillator. He was transported to Munson Medical Center.

“He didn’t survive the episode,” Brown said.

It’s the first fatality in the 24 years of the event. Brown said a rider suffered a heart attack four years ago, but survived.

“In fact, I believe he was racing this year,” Brown said.
