Gladys May Rattray Steltzner, 95, of Traverse City, passed peacefully into her Lord's presence on Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010, at Munson Medical Center. Gladys was born on Dec. 25, 1914, in Kalkaska County, the daughter of Milo and Angie (Peck) Rattray.

Gladys lived on the farm in Rapid City until she married Stanley Russell and moved to Detroit. Gladys became the loving mother of her sister, Louise's two small children, Dale and Janice Thornburg, and later raised George Shumar as her own son.

Stanley Russell preceded her death in 1976. She later married Donald Steltzner in 1984 and lived in Kings Court, Traverse City.

Surviving Gladys are her husband, Donald Steltzner; their combined family consisting of eight children, Dale (Val) Thornburg, of Williamsburg, Janice Fisher, of Kalkaska, George Shumar, of Mancelona, Gail (John) Steltzner, of Wisconsin, Dale Steltzner, of West Virginia, Barry (Linda) Steltzner, of Traverse City, Ramona (Ron) Bailey, of South Lyons, and Cheryl (Al) Bouma, of Wayland; along with 31 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; sisters, Doris Hughey, of Mancelona, Beatrice Follett, of Traverse City, Pauline Schaub, of Suttons Bay, and Leone Brown, of Cheboygan; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service for Gladys will take place at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Monday, Aug. 16, at 4 p.m., with a visitation held two hours prior. Tim Moeggenberg will serve as celebrant.
