Wrestling Roundup: Tompkins hits 150

Central's Kerndt makes history

HOUGHTON LAKE -- Kingsley senior Cary Tompkins is going to the wrestling state finals.

And he punched his ticket in a big way.

Tompkins earned a Class C regional title Saturday and in the process, collected his 150th career win.

In the 189-pound championship match at Houghton Lake, Tompkins earned an 8-3 decision over Joe Krantz from Sanford Meridian. It was also his milestone win.

Kingsley also qualified Austin Sanchez (130) and Joey Leach (140) for the state finals March 12-14 at The Palace of Auburn Hills. Both finished third Saturday.

Benzie Central qualified 160-pound junior Dave Knudsen at the meet with a fourth-place finish.

TC Central sends one to state finals

Traverse City Central freshman Connor Kerndt became the second Trojan wrestler in school history to qualify for the state finals.

Kerndt placed third at the Division 1 regional in the 103-pound bracket. In the consolation final, he beat Utica's Nick Brandt 7-3.

Several area wrestlers advance in St. Ignace

Forest Area's Justin Gordon moved his record to 45-0 with a first-place finish at the Division 4 regional at St. Ignace.

Gordon beat Iron Mountian's Bruce Romagnoli 8-3 in the 171-pound final for his second trip to the state finals.

Traverse City St. Francis had two first-time qualifiers in Isiah Schaub and Paul Britton. Schaub, a freshman, finished second at 112 pounds while Britton, a junior, was third at 189 pounds.

Manton senior Corey Webb became a state qualifier for the first time by finishing fourth at 145 pounds. His record stands at 39-11.
