February 26, 2009 12:00 am St. Francis won its first district wrestling championship last week, but the Gladiators bowed out in their regional opener Wednesday. Munising ousted St. Francis 42-30. The Gladiators won five weight classes -- Issiah Schaub at 119 (pin), Jack Jamison at 125 (void), Garrett Zamarron at 135 (void), Khamsi Riddell at 145 (void) and Paul Britten at 215 (pin). "We started a lot of young kids and didn't win a lot at the beginning of the season," St. Francis coach Mike Simaz said. "But they really matured as the season progressed." St. Francis will send four wrestlers to the individual regionals Saturday at St. Ignace -- three freshmen and a junior. "The future looks good," Simaz said. In Division 2, St. Johns beat Gaylord 44-21 for the regional championship at Bay City Western. Gaylord (37-3) reached the finals by upending Saginaw Arthur Hill. In Division 3, Roscommon defeated Grayling 57-24 for the regional title at Gladstone. Grayling (27-4) advanced with a 38-28 win over Kingsford while Roscommon eliminated Menominee 49-27.
