Wrestling Roundup: Central advances 4; West 3

Kingsley qualifies 10 in Division 3

TRAVERSE CITY -- Traverse City Central and West moved seven wrestlers on to regionals in Saturday's Division 1 district at TC Central.

The Trojans even placed two in the same weight class, as Max Walker and Kaleb Barrientoz had to wrestle each other in the consolation finals at 189 pounds with little at stake. Both had already earned spots in regionals by getting that far.

Walker (16-7 on the season) won the match 5-3 over Barrientoz (30-13). Walker was 3-1 on the day, and Barrientoz 2-2.

Connor Kerndt won the 103-pound consolation finals, defeating Midland Dow's Ryan Hill 9-5 for third place. Kerndt (37-12) was 2-1 on the day.

Zach Roberge was fourth at 152 pounds, improving to 27-10 on the season.

Both Central and West's qualifiers move on to regional action next Saturday at Saginaw Heritage.

Before that, though, both squads will travel to Escanaba on Monday to make up the team district that has already been canceled twice by weather. Central wrestles the hosts, while West gets Alpena.

Brad Gillison led West's regional qualifiers with a second-place finish at 145 pounds, dropping the finals to Flushing's David Yanka 12-5. Gillison was 2-1 on the day and is 37-6 this season.

Matt Town placed third at heavyweight, pinning Davison's Casey Clark in 39 seconds in the consolation final. Town was 3-1 on the day.

Dee Kirksey was 2-2 at 160 pounds, placing fourth. Both of his losses were to Swartz Creek's Seth Abbey.

Kingsley to send 10 to regional at Houghton Lk.

Kingsley advanced a district-high 10 wrestlers to regionals from the Division 3 event at Benzie Central.

All four Stags that made it to their weight-class finals won championships, including 140-pounder Joe Leach, Cody Mutter (160), 189-pounder Cary Thompkins and Austin Sanchez at 130. Each was 3-0 for the day.

Steven Fultz was third at 125 pounds, as was Trevor Voice at 103. Kingsley's fourth-place finishers included Tyler Croton (285),Tyler Lajko (145), Calvin Montgomery (112) and Gabe Collins (135).

The Stags go to regionals next Saturday at Houghton Lake.

Forest Area's Gordon wins district crown

Forest Area 171-pounder Justin Gordon won his weight class at Manton's Division 4 district.

He'll move on to regionals next Saturday at St. Ignace.

Gordon was 3-0 for the day to keep his record unblemished at 42-0. He beat Farwell's Justin Lassen by technical fall, 19-1, in the finals.
