Wolves hang on for victory

Ryan Brown returns, paces TC defense

From Staff Reports

GRAND RAPIDS — Ryan Brown returned from an injury and led the Traverse City Wolves to an 18-17 Great Midwest Football League win over host Grand Rapids on Saturday.

Brown was the standout on defense for the Wolves, including being in on the game-saving tackle.

Traverse City (2-2) led 18-11 late in the game when the Thunder scored on a running play from short yardage to make it 18-17. Grand Rapids elected to go for two, but Brown dragged down the runner on the 1-yard line, along with Elliot Gallagher and Alex Kohler.

The game was tied at 11-11 at the half after a 44-yard field goal from Pablo Bocardo and a 2-yard touchdown run set up on a Ray Gidley interception.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Wolves took the lead when Aaron Sitkiewicz blocked a punt in the Thunder end zone and recovered it for a touchdown.

The Wolves will have a bye-week for the Fourth of July holiday, but will return to action July 9 at the London Silverbacks.

"To be 2-2 with our third-string quarterback, we'll take that," Wolves owner Daniel Skibbe said. "With the break coming, those injuries will heal and we'll be looking for a strong second-half run."

They'll be back in Traverse City on July 16 to face the Southwest Michigan Punishers -- a team they beat 32-0 in the second week of the season.
