---- — West Shore Medical Center's Diabetes Self-Management Education Program in Manistee has been re-certified by the Diabetes Prevention and Control Program of the Michigan Department of Community Health and also is recognized by the American Diabetes Association.

Certified programs must meet specific requirements, including having an instructional team that maintains current knowledge in diabetes management, behavioral interventions and skills in teaching, learning and counseling; focusing on individualized educational planning even in group settings; and implementing a continuous quality improvement process.

The West Shore program provides group and individual classes on nutrition, exercise, medications and glucose monitoring. Most insurances cover the class fee, and support persons are encouraged to attend the classes at no additional charge. For more information, call a West Shore Medical Center diabetes educator, 398-1033.

The Community Health Center of Northern Michigan recently received a check for $325 from the team members of Odawa Casino Resort in Petoskey.

The funds were raised through an optional Blue Jean Day in which team members donate $5 once a month to a designated organization in exchange for a day to swap their dress pants for jeans.

There have been six Blue Jean Days in 2010, which have raised a total of $2,425.

Other recent recipients have included Habitat for Humanity and Hospice of Little Traverse Bay.
