Soak up 8 relaxing experiences

Spa tour benefits cancer society

TRAVERSE CITY — This region already is known for golf, restaurants and wineries.

Now, a group of resorts wants to market another area attraction: spas.

The Northern Michigan Spa Tour includes eight regional resorts from Mackinac Island to Boyne Falls, Bellaire, Gaylord and the Traverse City area. The partnership launched early this year, and next week marks the tour's first united effort.

During Nov. 8-14, participating spas will donate $10 from each 50-minute or longer spa service to the American Cancer Society. The promotion and charity event is the first of what will be "multiple events or functions" organized by the spa tour, said Sean Handler, Boyne Mountain director of spas.

The tour highlights spas as a stress-reducing attraction, with "preventative health and well-being" benefits, he said.

"(It) definitely is a newer amenity and a newer experience, but it's one that leaves such lasting health results," Handler said. "I don't think as many people think, per se, about northern Michigan as a place to spa."

Boyne's spas at Bay Harbor and at Boyne Mountain are among the tour participants.

Grand Traverse Resort & Spa, in Acme, also will donate to the cancer society next week. Spa Director Dawn Olsen said the resort spa services include massages, facials, manicures and pedicures, haircuts and colors. The spa also will give away complimentary treatments to cancer patients that week, she said.

At Crystal Mountain Resort & Spa, in Thompsonville, guests can enjoy its environmentally friendly products and green-built facility. Spa Sales Manager Stephanie Scott said the tour creates "a greater awareness" of the region's spas.

During the week, the spas also teamed up to offer prizes, including a grand prize giveaway of an overnight stay at each of the eight resorts on the tour and a spa service.
