Dr. Ryan Brandt of Lake City and Dr. Samuel Blanchard of Cadillac received scholarships from the Cadillac Area Community Foundation.
They both will receive $2,500 based on recommendations from the Ardis/Lueder Northern Lower Michigan Endowed Scholarship Fund Advisory Committee. The endowed fund provides scholarships to dental students from Wexford, Missaukee and Osceola counties to help them complete their education and return to the area to practice dentistry.
Brandt received a DDS from the University of Michigan, where he is a second-year resident in the three-year endodontics program.
Blanchard received a DDS from the University of Detroit Mercy and is a first-year resident in the 30-month pediatric dental program at U-M.

Chris Simmon, CRNA, recently traveled with a mission to the Dominican Republic to provide free medical attention to patients in need. He is employed by Otsego Memorial Hospital in Gaylord.
The Midwest Medical Mission was divided into surgical and clinical teams. For seven days, Simmon worked with the surgical team at a hospital in San Pedro, where he used his expertise in anesthesiology to help the team perform a variety of surgeries.

Dr. William Nowak of Traverse City recently completed training in a new minimally-invasive surgical procedure for pelvic organ prolapses.
Nowak was one of three Michigan gynecologic surgeons and one of 15 advanced surgeons nationwide invited to participate in the hands-on surgical lab. He is a board-certified gynecologic surgeon and currently is accepting new patients at his Traverse City practice. Call 938-2366.

Jim Scherrer of Traverse City and Rebecca Moore of Ludington were among seven outstanding Michigan residents honored for their exemplary leadership and support of children with mental health challenges and their families at the annual conference of the Association for Children's Mental Health.
Scherrer received the ACMH Leadership Award. Moore received the ACMH Parent/Professional Partnership Award.
