Tickets on sale for Art on the Bluffs

ARCADIA -- Tickets are available for West Shore Medical Center's "Art on the Bluffs." Reservations are due by Friday.

The fundraiser will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Aug. 1 at Arcadia Bluffs Golf Club, 14710 Northwood Highway. It includes an exclusive Tuscan-style dinner, created by Arcadia Bluffs and served under tents overlooking Lake Michigan. There also will be silent and live auctions of original art inspired by "Art on the Bluffs."

Tickets are $100 per person and proceeds will help purchase new mammography equipment. For details or tickets, call 398-1508.

Relay for Life teams hit the home stretch

ELBERTA -- Benzie County Relay for Life teams are in the home stretch of their fund-raising efforts to raise more than $63,000 at this year's relay.

Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital's Team Lisa will hold a Flowers and Flamingos Garden Tour from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday. The tour will include eight gardens. Tickets are $8 and available at the hospital.

The Stapleton's relay team will pump your gas for a donation from 4 to 8 p.m. July 25 at Stapleton's Corner Store, located at the intersection of U.S. 31 and M-115 West.

Glen's and Friends continue to raise money with a can and bottle drive at Glen's in Frankfort and plan a car wash for the weekend of the relay.

The Relay for Life will run for 24 hours beginning at 10 a.m. Aug. 9 at the Elberta Waterfront Park. A giant yard sale will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 9.

There also will be food, kids' games, entertainment and a luminary service at dusk.

Ways to convince drivers to quit

TRAVERSE CITY -- Munson Medical Center and AARP will offer a class to provide strategies to help convince older loved ones to stop driving.

"We Need to Talk" will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday at Munson Community Health Center, room A, 550 Munson Ave. It will be led by Munson senior occupational therapist and certified driver rehabilitation specialist Laura Martin.

Taking the confusion out of supplements

TRAVERSE CITY -- Juice Plus whole food supplement will offer a free seminar to help explain whole food nutrition.

"You Are What Your Mama Ate" will begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Twin Lakes Park & Conference Center, 6800 N. Long Lake Rd. Dr. Doug Odom will explain the challenges, choices and consequences people face in today's world, weight loss versus fat loss, simple ways for families to improve their nutrition and how whole foods can affect physical, mental and emotional health. Life Line screening in Interlochen

INTERLOCHEN -- Life Line Screening will conduct screenings to detect the risk of stroke, vascular disease and heart rhythm irregularities on Wednesday at the Golden Fellowship Hall.

Life Line Screening was established in 1993 and has become the nation's leading provider of preventive health screenings.

Screenings will be offered by appointment starting at 9 a.m. The cost is $140 for four screenings, or $199 for all eight screenings. The Golden Fellowship Hall is located at 9700 Riley Road. For details or to schedule an appointment, call (800) 643-6188.

Hospitality House Week at Munson

TRAVERSE CITY -- Munson Manor Hospitality House will celebrate Hospitality House Week with an open house on July 24.

Munson Manor opened its doors in November 2000. Since then, more than 23,000 people have stayed at the 30-bed house that serves more than 24 counties in northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.

The public and hospital staff are invited to the event from 2 to 4 p.m. at the house, 1220 Medical Campus Dr. Ice cream floats will be served and guided tours will be led by experienced volunteers and staff.

'Quit (smoking) for Life' class offered

MANISTEE -- West Shore Medical Center will sponsor an eight-session series designed to help people who want to quit smoking or using tobacco.

"Quit for Life: Successful Tobacco Cessation Strategies" is a group-based program that uses educational and supportive resources to help tobacco users quit for good. The class will begin at 1 p.m. July 24 in the West Shore Education Center, 1465 E. Parkdale.

The cost for the eight-week program is $25 per person.

RNs' Association meeting, picnic

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Registered Nurses Association of Michigan invites its members and guests to a business meeting and picnic on July 26.

The meeting will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at East Bay Park. The picnic will follow. Participants may bring a guest and are asked to bring a dish to pass, beverage and table setting. For details, call 946-2469.

Health and Fitness Fair in Gaylord

GAYLORD -- The public is invited to a free health and fitness fair, "Changing 4he Better" on July 26.

The event has been organized as a Girl Scout Gold Award project by local high school seniors and Girl Scouts Lisa Kimmell and Abigail Koprowicz.

All vendors are donating their services.

The fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Community Gardens, behind Gaylord High School.

It will feature 18 local vendors providing activities and information designed to help promote healthier living.

Activities include kids games, a golf simulator and a rock-climbing wall. There also will be free give-aways.

Bethany Christian Services training

TRAVERSE CITY -- Eligibility criteria for a federally-funded program have been broadened and Bethany Christian Services is offering free community "Understanding Infant Adoption" training to anyone who may work with or provide support to pregnant women and teens.

Training will be offered from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on July 31 at Munson Community Health Center, 550 Munson Ave.; and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 27 at a location to be determined.

The goal is to provide education on adoption law and practice in the state, birth father's rights and responsibilities, special issues in counseling teens, nondirective, non-coercive counseling and more.

Interested organizations may schedule a half-day or full-day training with complimentary lunch at their facility, or individuals may register for an open training. Hospice volunteer training available

CADILLAC -- Heartland Hospice is looking for caring, dedicated people with an interest in serving terminally ill patients and their families in the Traverse City area and outlying communities.
