Author will lead weight-loss seminar TRAVERSE CITY -- Pat Altvater, author and creator of "Journey to Wow-Choose Health Now," will bring her "The Secret of Permanent Weight Loss" seminar to the Higher Self Bookstore on Saturday. Altvater created the "Journey to Wow-Choose Health Now" program in 2007 after releasing her first book, "Journey to Health." She formed the Transformations Institute and is one of a few licensed "Law of Attraction" coaches in the U.S. She also is the author of the e-book, "The Secret of Permanent Weight Loss." Volunteer open house at Pavilions TRAVERSE CITY -- The Grand Traverse Pavilions will host an open house to recognize its more than 300 volunteers during National Volunteer Week. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday and Tuesday in the Volunteer Center on the third floor of Hawthorn Cottage. The theme is "Volunteers Plant Seeds of Kindness." WRC offers assault prevention program TRAVERSE CITY -- In recognition of April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the Women's Resource Center will offer a sexual assault awareness and prevention program. Guest speaker Chris Pline, sixth degree master black belt instructor in Tae Kwon Do from ATA Blackbelt Academy, will offer awareness and prevention tips from the S.H.A.R.P. (Sexual Harassment, Assault & Rape Prevention) program. His presentation will start at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the WRC, 720 S. Elmwood. There is no charge and the public is welcome. Diabetes education class scheduled Grayling -- "Health Habits: Good Carbs, Better Carbs-Simple Carbohydrate County" is a class designed to help people living with diabetes overcome challenges through education and health food choices. The free class will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mercy Hospital Grayling's Crawford Room. Participants will learn carbohydrate counting, meal planning, how to read food labels, before-meal and after-meal testing and how to use a blood glucose monitoring system. Hipple discusses mental illness Petoskey -- Former NFL quarterback Eric Hipple will open activities for Mental Health Month with a program on mental illness and suicide. His appearance is sponsored by North Country Community Mental Health. A member of the 1980-90 Detroit Lions, Hipple now is outreach coordinator for the University of Michigan Depression Center. The program will start at 6:30 p.m. on May 1 at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Charlevoix Street. It will be preceded by a tailgate party from 5 to 6:30 p.m., with a light meal and a chance to meet Hipple with photo and autograph opportunities. Hipple also will be the featured speaker on May 3 in conjunction with the 5K Run/One Mile Walk at Bayfront Park in Petoskey's Waterfront Area. Late race registration will be held from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the waterfront. The run will begin at 10 a.m. and the registration fee is $12 through Friday; $15 after Friday. The walk is free and will start at 10:10 a.m. Other events include a "Faces of Recovery" exhibit, door prizes, consumer recognition and community recognition awards and music by Charlie's Root Fusion. Conference for relative caregivers Roscommon -- Relatives caring for a family member's child or children living in northern lower Michigan are invited to a free "Relative Caregiver Conference." More than 200 individuals and families in the area have been identified as relative caregivers to a family member's child or children. They face a variety of challenges when caring for children experiencing the trauma of abuse, neglect, loss of a parent and/or removal from their homes. The goal of the conference is to reach out to these caregivers and to create local community support networks. The conference will be held May 9 at Kirtland Community College. Registration will be held from 8 to 8:45 a.m. in the KCC Student Center, followed by a general session on "Parenting Someone Else's Child." Workshops will be offered from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 2 p.m., with lunch and networking from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. The closing session will be held from 2:15 to 3 p.m. and will include an evaluation of the conference by participants. Lunch will be provided and assistance with transportation if needed. Day care also will be available on a limited basis and early registration is encouraged if day care is needed. Thai Yoga massage open house set TRAVERSE CITY -- Living Light Massage and Wellness Center will hold an open house to introduce Thai Yoga massage. Developed in Buddhist temples, Thai Yoga massage is a fusion of acupressure, energy work and Yoga-like stretching.
