Speed a factor in fatal Benzie County crash

LAKE ANN — Authorities believe a single-vehicle accident that claimed the life of a Lake Ann man occurred hours before the crash was discovered.

Kevin Matthew Hines, 32, died Monday after his pickup truck crashed into a tree off Fewins Road about a mile east of M-669. Benzie County sheriff’s Detective Sgt. Troy Lamerson said two residents reported they heard a loud crash at 2 a.m.

“They looked out the window, but did not see anything or make calls to the sheriff’s office,” he said.

Hines’ truck was reported at about 8 a.m. Lamerson said Hines, who worked as a licensed contractor, traveled westbound when his truck crossed the center line.

“It hit a large tree pretty much head-on,” he said. “There was a massive amount of damage. It spun around clockwise and rolled over onto its roof.”

Lamerson said detectives believe speed was a factor. He said the speed limit was 55 mph, but wasn’t posted.

“Deputies on the scene believe due to the extent of the damage it was traveling well in excess of 55 mph,” he said.
