TRAVERSE CITY — Leelanau County Sheriff’s deputies discovered the truth to an old saying that criminals always return to the scene of the crime.
Patrons of the Cedar Tavern called police Monday at 10:39 p.m. when they watched a man break a window in the Blue Moon Ice Cream Shop, grab something, and walk to a waiting car. Witnesses provided responding deputies with a description of the car and its license plate.
While deputies investigated the break-in, a car matching the description slowly drove by and parked nearby.
Deputies arrested the occupants when the license plate matched the one provided by witnesses. Sheriff’s officials reported the driver told deputies the man took the cash register from the store. The register reportedly contained about $13.
Police arrested the two men from Traverse City, ages 22 and 23, for breaking and entering and they were lodged in the Leelanau County jail.
