James P. Leonard

SUTTONS BAY — James Peter Leonard passed away Jan. 9, 2013, at the age of 78, leaving his wife, Patricia, and five children and their spouses, Beverly (Richard) Sewell, Timothy (Monica) Leonard, Theodore (Barbara) Leonard, Kathryn (Byron) Bolton and John Leonard. Jim enjoyed his 10 grandchildren, Michael, Peter, Alexandra, Andrew, Grace, John, Grant, Mary Kate, Isabella and Daniel. His closest friends were his five cousins, Leo, Edward, Michael, Gerald and Patrick Foy, each bantering for his best jokes.

His earlier days were spent at St. Frederick High School in Pontiac, having many wonderful friendships. After high school Jim attended the University of Michigan and then enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Germany for three years.

He and Pat were married in 1958.

Jim was an employee of General Motors for over 20 years.

He looked forward to his Wednesday golf league with his good friends at GM. Jim was a parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church in Detroit and a member of the church choir, where he enjoyed many lifelong friendships.

When he retired, he and Pat moved up to the Traverse City area with their youngest two children. He became fascinated with antiques, especially wooden-handled golf clubs from Scotland and developed quite a collection.

After his stroke 12 years ago his abilities became limited and he was no longer able to travel. His last days were spent at Cherry Hill Haven and Bortz Health Care, both places giving loving and professional assistance for which the family is especially grateful. He will be missed by his family and friends. May he rest in peace.

The funeral Mass was held Jan. 12 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Father Donald Libby served as celebrant. Burial in St. Michael's Cemetery, Suttons Bay, will be announced in the spring.

Memorials may be directed to Respect Life, PO Box 5418, Traverse City, MI 49696-5418 and/or Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 6982 S. Schomberg Road, Cedar, MI 49621.
