Caretaker sentenced to year in jail

SUTTONS BAY — A Leland Township woman who stole at least $40,000 from a senior citizen in her care will spend up to a year in jail.

Eighty-sixth District Court Judge Michael Stepka on Friday sentenced Carolyn Flees, 59, to 365 days in jail.

A Leelanau County Sheriff’s Department investigation found Flees embezzled tens of thousands of dollars from the victim, an 85-year-old man she took care of for seven years. She pleaded guilty in December to a reduced misdemeanor charge of embezzlement of $200 to $1,000, an offer made by prosecutors with the victim’s family’s permission.

Flees is eligible for a community corrections program in 150 days. She must pay back $30,000 in restitution in two years.
