Man accused of punching his wife

TRAVERSE CITY — A Traverse City man who punched his wife in the abdomen hard enough to leave a bruise faces his sixth domestic violence offense, authorities said.

Christopher Thomas Kraft, 25, appeared Tuesday in 86th District Court for a video arraignment on a felony domestic violence charge. Judge Michael Haley set a $10,000 cash or surety bond with the condition Kraft not have contact with his girlfriend.

The police report states Kraft’s wife, 23, told a sheriff’s deputy that days of verbal arguments escalated to physical altercations. Kraft punched her in the head and shoulder while he drove a car with her child in a car seat and later punched her in the stomach with his fist.

“The punch left a significant bruise on the lower left quadrant of (her) abdomen,” the report states.

Kraft suffered a broken arm on Saturday after a vehicle hit him as he walked down South Long Lake Road. A deputy attempted to contact Kraft in Munson Medical Center’s emergency room, but was told Kraft left the hospital on foot after his release.

The deputy eventually tracked Kraft down at Meijer, where he was sending a text message his wife for a ride, and asked what happened between him and his wife.

“He responded he punched her in the stomach, and he was probably going to prison for it,” the police report states.

Conviction on a third-offense domestic violence charge carries a penalty of up to five years in prison. Court documents state Kraft has five prior domestic violence convictions.
