TRAVERSE CITY — Maria Rapson scored with 28 seconds left in the first half and that goal stood as Traverse City West beat Petoskey 1-0 in a Big North Conference soccer opener Tuesday.
Petoskey is the defending league champion.
“Big win,” West coach Lauran Pinto said.
Jessica Kalbfleisch drew the assist on Rapson’s tally.
Savanna Wojtanowski was in goal.
West also won the JV game 3-0 on goals by Ellie Taplin, Mary Kate Rose and Stephanie DeVries. Taplin and Emily Jameson picked up assists. Kaylie Camp played most of the game in goal.
TC Liberty 0
Junior forward Katie Kitely scored two goals as Charlevoix defeated the TC Liberty 6-0 in a Lake Michigan Conference contest.
The Rayders, who had 28 shots on goal, led 3-0 at the break. Hannah Herboldsheimer, Kaitlin Hinkey, Elizabeth Way and Kelsey Engstrom also tallied for Charlevoix. Senior Bailee Stevens and sophomore Gloria Greene shared the shutout in goal.

Mesick 3 3
Amanda Youker pitched a one-hitter in the opener and a three-hitter in the nightcap as Kingsley swept Mesick by identical 8-3 scores in a Northwest Conference doubleheader.
Youker struck out 16 in the two games.
Kaitlyn Totten pounded out a pair of doubles in game one for Kingsley. Destiny Scott had a triple and Totten and Bree Colgrove doubles in the nightcap.
Lake Leelanau SM 7 17
Benzie Central 6 7
Marta Herman had four hits for the night and drove in the opener’s winning run in Lake Leelanau St. Mary’s 7-6 and 17-7 doubleheader sweep of Benzie Central.
Herman’s RBI single capped off four straight hits that brought in the winning runs in the 7-6 opener. Megan Popp was the winning pitcher, and Rachael Thon, Herman and Anna Perkette each had two hits.
The Eagles scored nine run in the nightcap’s fourth inning to break it open. Hannah Weber, Maeve Alflin, Rachael Schaub and Herman had two hits each, while Mary Rexroat picked up the win.
